The two writers in my house argue about commas all the time. It gets hairy when we edit each other's work. Disturbs the marital harmony. 😆

Commas are the WORST.

1. I was glad to hear that grammar has changed. I thought I'd just learned some things incorrectly.

2. I'm intrigued by your changing Rhizosphere to The Understory. I'd love to hear the inspiration/thought process behind that. To me it feels like emergence. :) <3

This gave me a chuckle, Julie, although I don't imagine you intended that. You mean emergence as in out of the ground and into the understory?

Yes. Like a root creating shoots and leaves.

So what happened. I was at a week-long writing workshop over a year ago and some of the participants thought "Rhizosphere" was a wasted title. What it means or what it's about is not instantly recognizable. "The Understory" is overused, but at least it has "story" in the title, so a person may infer that it's about writing. Let me know your thoughts. I'd love to hear. Candidly. Because nothing is written in stone at this point. And it always can be changed.

Regarding the comma issue, I tend to try to say these sentences out loud as if I'm having a conversation so I can get the feel of where the pause and transition is to put the comma--or not. I definitely still goof up. Sometimes I also just do. not. care. But I'm not a published author (yet) so...maybe that's why!

I really wish we'd stop capitalizing Internet. It feels very 1997 to do so.

I so agree with you about internet. And I actually don't like to see Earth capitalized. It seems more like Pluto or some other faraway planet when it's capitalized, instead of the place we live.

To me, there is some flexibility when it comes to commas (see Jeanne's comment 😀). For instance, here is one example. "Of course I like commas." As opposed to "Of course, I like commas." I wouldn't use a comma in this case because when you read that sentence, you don't pause. Playing with punctuation can be an artform in itself. McCarthy's "The Road" is a great example of that. But you have to know what you're doing and set your own rules in advance. Books like "The Road" follow their own rules of punctuation quite strictly. If you don't know what you're doing, it's best to stick to traditional punctuation, IMO.

Love it! Am chuckling. I have learned that I don't know what I'm doing, lol.

I use THE COPY EDITOR'S HANDBOOK by Amy Einsohn and Marilyn Schwartz which is a really great resource. They have a sense of humor about it all which makes the book a surprisingly good read.

It’s the Oxford comma rule for me, and I proudly and correctly use it. I even have the t-shirt.

Thank you, I am not alone. I have to look punctuation and 'right word' up all the time. I think because when I speak, I am all over the place/

I probably should do that too, Joshua, meaning follow the same rules on the Internet that I follow for analog publication.

Love the Understory, and logo! Punctuation is ever changing and keeps us on our literary toes. Sometimes I think that we can get too pre-occupied with its rules when we should be telling our story how it wants to be told. Looking forward to how Understory comes into being💚
