Thank you for being a trail blazer for us! I love visiting bookstores and have a rating system for them. My rating system includes several markers, including the quality of their nature writing section. I am susprised how many book stores still do not have one but also delighted at how many do! The bookstores that have a quality nature section get my highest ratings. 🏆

Me too! My rating of bookstores is directly related to their nature writing section.

Your words made me cry: a valentine to the earth. May I remember to also write that love note in everything I write. Bless you for being you!

Thank you for not yielding to the pressure to take the most interesting parts out of your first book. Ecology of a Cracker Childhood is a treasure.

Janisse, you've been standing up for nature writing for so long, and you're still at it ... such an amazing testimony to faith and dedication and sheer staying power. We all thank you and our beloved planet thanks you. 💚 But also, there's another reason you were admitted to that club long ago, a reason you didn't mention: You're a damn good nature writer!

I so love this focus on appreciating your own past luck while declaring that you are a "lucky person" now. It seems like that perspective might help writers express their stories, including the unlucky and traumatizing things they've experienced or seen, without sounding self-pitying or in some other way alienating the reader. Not to mention I bet that mindset of "inherent luck" makes for a happier life. Thanks for sharing it. Good reminder for me. :)

I see you:)! There is so much here. These two sentences leaped out at me: "I got admitted because I did the great work more than I did the daily work." and "Everything I've ever written, in one way or another, is a valentine to the earth." Being able to know and spend time with the greats in nature writing (I include you) must have been and is invigorating. There are more and more nature writing books in bookstores these days - when I go into a bookstore, it is generally the first place I go. I must admit, my esteem of a bookstore is directly related to how well populated and diverse their nature writing section is. Thank you for perpetuating and keeping nature writing alive and well!
